Best Bicycle Touring Tires No.2: Schwalbe Marathon HS420
Editor’s Rating for this tires: 10/10 – Best Value for the Money
Rolling: 4/6 | Road Grip: 4/6 | Off-Road Grip: 2.5/6 | Puncture Protection: 5/6 | Durability: 5.5/6
Why it’s great: If Schwalbe Marathon Plus seems like expensive tires, then you can pay attention to these tires – the Schwalbe Marathon HS420. Their main difference is that they have a lower level of protection (GreenGuard) from punctures in comparison with the Plus model.
However, during my bike trip across Europe, I bought the Schwalbe Marathon for my back wheel and I was very happy with my choice and these tire worth the money. I got zero flats in 3000 miles, and tire protector is still in good condition so I can ride another 3000 miles or even more.
At the same time during that bicycle trip, I’ve had a cheap $12 front tire from the sports store and it was worn out in only 1500 miles and I punctured it once. But the sad news is that I did not notice when I pierced my front wheel and during a steep turn at high speed, I fell off the bike. Fortunately, I tore only my pants and a little bit of my knee. It could be worse. At that moment, I said to myself: “Never again will I buy a bad tire if there is an opportunity to buy a good one with puncture protection.”
So my conclusion about Schwalbe Marathon HS420 – these bicycle touring tires are worth the money. They are not puncture-proof and there are no puncture-proof tires on the market because all it takes is a really long sharp object and then you can puncture even a truck tire. But the puncture protection reduces chances of flats from small/average in size object by many percents. Thus, increases your safety and saves you time.See Now
